Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

This simply means that the rewrite module is not enabled in your apache2. You can enable rewrite module in apache2 by executing this command

sudo a2enmod rewrite

Remember to restart apache2
