To speedup the process, it is better to add a cron job to run awstats.pl everyday at a specified time. This will make your life a lot more easy than running it manually.
But of course, if you are running it for the first time on a big log file then you will have to run manually and wait until it finishes. But for subsequent runs, make it a cron job.
